The church was built by the Commander of Russian forces whose men built the fortifications that surround Kaunas. These battlements, designed to thwart the dreaded Germans, failed as defensive barriers. At Fort 1, Big Bertha killed 1000 local troops in a day. Fort 8, close to my home, has numerous battle scars. Today these forts are partially restored and used for ceremonies, concerts and school field trips.The Basilica has recently been refurbished. When built, it featured magnificent Orthodox murals. These have been 'painted-out'. One guess for the reason why...
