Man findet ihn vom Sommer bis in den Spätherbst hinein, an Stümpfen und Stämmen von Pappeln. Er bewohnt totes stehendes, liegendes Holz, Strünke und Lagerholz. Allerdings ist der Pappel-Schüppling ungenießbar.
