Modesta coal washery; Asturias - Northern Spain

Decomissioned summer 2007. The coal came straight from the bottom of the pits to this facility by means of a system of more than 5 km long conveyor belts all running underground. This spring one night, there was a fire into the tunnel and the belt with the coal started to burn, the smoke came out through the washery end and the town requiered to be evacuated. The fire brigade expended 1 week fighting against it and at the end they decided to flood the tunnel to avoid the fire progress to the pits and the coal stocked underground. As a result of the damage caused to the system and its cost to be repaired the company decided to shut down this facility and ship the coal by road to other large washery. It will start to be scrapped in a near future.

    Harald,
This will be history in a year time. We are living the end of 150 years of industrial age over here in Asturias. Not many things will be preserved. The landscape and way of life will change for ever. I think you went throught that before in central Europe and UK.

    Regards
    Ruben

I wish, Spain would not be so far away from Germany :-( This looks wonderful!
