Japanese Wineberry

On the inner courtyard of an old dilapidated farmhouse, I found a rare shrub with Japanese wineberries.

The Japanese wineberry (also known as wine raspberry) is a spiny shrub, native to northern China, Japan & Korea.
The plant was introduced into Europe around 1876 but is very little used nowadays by berry breeders.

It is prized for its delicious edible raspberry-like berries. I tasted one and it had a fresh sweet sour taste……. :-))

Dutch name : Japanse Wijnbes
German name : Japanische Weinbeere (auch Rotborstige Himbeere genannt)
Latin name : Rubus phoenicolasius
