Great Cormorant

The great cormorant can be found widespread in Europe, Asia, Oceania and eastern North America.
This bird breeds mainly on coasts but also increasingly inland.

Many fishermen see in the great cormorant a competitor for fish. That’s why it was nearly hunted to extinction in the past !

Thanks to conservation efforts its numbers increased again, but this brings the cormorant nowadays into conflict with fisheries once more……..

Dutch name : Aalscholver
German name : Kormoran
Latin name : Phalacrocorax carbo

In seiner gewohnten Seenlandschaft sitzt der große, schwarze Kerl hier sehr fotogen in der Sonne und wartet nur bis du ihn fotografierst ;-)

i do admire their synanthropic tendencies! in places that have water they seem to be omnipresent these days… even in giant harbor towns like mine. whenever i ride the train across the river they are there, presenting their wings to the warmth of the sun, signalling him: "i dry therefore i'm sate!"; ) – – nice, how in your shot he matches the subtle colors of his surroundings perfectly! greetings, sabine.
