I think that if your "Friends" photo had been presented like a black & white or (even worse) a colored pic, there would be no interest at all (in fact, it would have been just another cliche image). But you guessed right not to do this error. At the end you decided to present it like this, like a tremendously impressive red/black photo-portrait of two young female figures. Thus, you deserve compliments both for your decision and the final result.
