Church of Santa Clara

The church of Santa Clara is a Catholic church located in the parish of Sé, Porto / Portugal.
Inside we find one of the best examples of art gilded Baroque Joanino.
Built next to the most visible haul to the Walls Fernandinas, the Church of Santa Clara was completed in 1457, so with the monastery with which it was set. This was due to a request from Clare Franciscan nuns who wanted to replace the former monastery, the smallest and most modest thirteenth century.
With the elimination of several smaller monasteries in various locations between the fifteenth century and the sixteenth century, the nuns were up adding in Santa Clara leading beyond their rent, one of a toll for all goods passing through the Douro River .
In the late nineteenth century, with the death of the last nun, the monastery was abolished what caused some degradation of the building. Later, state assets, and made the necessary work has been adapted for Health Center and other social oriented institutions and public.
The entrance to the church is through a Baroque gate dated 1697 and reformulated in the eighteenth century, with Renaissance elements as Solomonic columns and Corinthian capitals. Inside we can see all the magnificence of this church, all covered with gilded carvings of the first half of the eighteenth century.
