Cerezal colliery; Asturias - Northern Spain

Decomissioned in 1988. At the background is the former mine entrance from 1910. The pit was not plugged in nor flooded and the winding engine is still ready to run if necessary; nowadays this pit is maintained as an emergency exit for another colliery in service at the valley 10 km away downstream.

    Burkhard,
This pit wil never be reactivated again. It was one of the smallest of the company with no more than 300 workers. Most of its buildings were demolished. I was decomissioned because its coal reserves are exhausted. It will be maintained meanwhile the other colliery is in service. Later on they will chop off the cables, they will brick up the windows of the machine house, they will switch off the pumps and the pit will be flooded for ever.
