Castle ‘Gravensteen‘ at Gent (Belgium)
In the 9th. century there was already a primitive wooden castle on this spot to protect the area against attacks from the Vikings.
In the early Middle Ages the castle was rebuilt into a stone-fortified construction.
Several expansion works in the following centuries gave it the present and impressive 12th. century appearance.
