The juxtaposition here is not just two images but two realities bound in one dream The tall building symbolizing the goal to move up into another class socially and finically that appears faint and foggy , a non tangible world that is his dream. While in the foreground the subject is in a tangible world where he handles the laundry of the middle class that works in the background . His smiles the zeal of washing himself pure is the source of his faith to continue and make the impossible possible someday, somehow from with the Mumbai Dhobi Ghats.

cleansing himself to keep the dream alive and pure, even though it may already be chipped a little – just like his tooth… – – the juxtapostion of the down-to-earth, practical and substantial foreground with the somewhat light and vague distant "beyond": very symbolic indeed! life is in the forground, though! what great (slightly mephistophelean! ; )) charisma, openness and joie de vivre! he still has the punch to pursue his dream – and GOOD FOR HIM! greetings, sabine.
