Castle Rumbeke (Belgium)

An ancient fortress was already constructed on this spot in the 9th century.

The present castle was built in the first half of the 16th century in Flemish Renaissance style.
In the sixties of the previous century, the castle was last restored.

During the first World War (1914 – 1918) the castle was located close to the front line.
The German army used the edifice not only as headquarters but it was also the home of the German baron Manfred von Richthofen, better known as the ‘Red Baron’, who became ‘famous’ for shooting down 80 British aircrafts above Belgium and France in his brightly painted red airplane.
