Epirus region(Western Greece) Zagorochoria villages
The bridge of Kokkoros
Zagorochoria is a historic community of around 50 villages situated in one of the most mountainous regions of Greece.Their origin dates back in 17th century and because of their remote site they enjoyed an almost independent state during Ottoman occupation thus developping a thriving local soceity based mainly on agriculture, cattle and handicrafts. But, what they really remained famous for, was the art of stone and iron masonry which they passed for ages from father to son and has remained till today reflected on the architecture of their houses, cobble stone paths and especially on the solid construction of entirely handmade bridges, real masterpieces, that still are in place, having survived hard winters, tones of snow and even strong earthquaques. These bridges were the only mean of communication between the villages, sometimes at the entrance of canyons, so they represented a quite important element of social life.
In the photo, one of the many bridges, the bridge of Kokkoros.
