`Io

Coming home the other day I spotted this young `io on a utility wire a half block from my house. I went back and he posed for me for a couple of minutes, then left without even saying goodbye.

The `Io is endemic to Hawai`i and was a symbol of royalty in Hawaiian legend. The `Io is also the only hawk native to Hawai`i. They only breed on the Big Island but have been occasionally seen on Maui, O`ahu, and Kaua`i. It is listed as an endangered species with an estimated population of 1400-2500.
