Two Limes Worth of Wisdom

In Puerto Viejo de Limon, a small town in Costa Rica, An old man sat with two lemons. Hos father passed in 1940, soon it was up to him to find away. In time there was nothing. "You can live here he said , but it's hard without work and place. The tourist come but they don't speak to us. To them this place is paradise. Maybe that's because they can leave, build retreats and leave. Can you help me, I need to eat".

I guess if you stay in paradise you become lost and forget yourself for ever. It's not strange but he misses his parents.

some great comments here! don't really have anything to add, except maybe that i clicked myself through your study of the old man, wondering what those two spheres in front of him were? stupid me at first mistook them for harmony relaxation balls. i guess it mirrors the attitude most tourists display, when wandering through their vacation resort, coming for relaxation only, unwilling to take in the downsides of their paradise. relaxation balls – what idiocy! limes… food! a quantum of life. and yet they seem to weigh heavily on him. his look, his posture, the embodiment of utter exhaustion and defenselessness. poverty strips a man of his balls, renders him impotent and lonely. behind his wooden bar he looks like man forced to endure a ride in a carousel he's terribly afraid of… greetings, sabine.

We all miss our loved one that have passed. By remembering them we keep a part of them alive. A difficult situation with the tourist, a lot of times the locals swarm the tourist so they tend to keep a distance yet it hurts the locals who need the income the most.

I was very impressed by this sad story, how difficult is the life of this man ...One man's paradise is another man's hell... so sad.
    Impressive portrait.

It reminds me of some story I read on the All Inclusive holiday boom. All you can eat and drink in one paradise location. But the downside of this is the local economy crashes as no tourists leave paradise to spend their money anyplace else ! an oasis in a desert and who suffers most people like this poor guy. Sad tale Glenn. Thank you for sharing it with us here

    Respect

at first glance i focused on his hands - just as gerhard did - but after a while i looked in his face, his eyes look empty, as if life was going on without him, paradise is not much use to him, as he obviously can´t make a proper living there. what paradise is for us, is reality to him, a grimm reality it seems...

It's strange. I've been reading your text first and it made me think. It's important to point at these so-called paradises, wich in fewest cases are.

But the I looked at the phtograph and I was really hypnotized by there huge hands. It even took me a while so see the face ... these hands.
