On the morning of May 11, 1671, the Mother Church of Odivelas had obvious signs of theft, which occurred during the previous night. The stolen items were two sacred vessels, where the hosts were saved, the child Jesus, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Egypt clothings and other saints. Shortly after the alert that day, were searched all the houses of Odivelas. In the following days the search extended the city of Lisbon and has reached almost the same throughout the country: It was the time of the Inquisition, and the investigation into the theft took such proportions that the Pope, Innocent XI, had to intervene to prevent violence against the New Christians, by suspending the operation of religious courts for 3 years (1678-1681). After a month of intense searching and multiple inquiries on June 16, 1671 part of the robbery was found hidden in brushwood, where later was built the Standard of the Lord Stolen.
The suspects in the robbery were many but the real author of the theft was caught by chance on the 16th of October, when he tried to steal chickens in Odivelas Monastery of S. Dinis . As brought with him some of the objects stolen from the Church of Odivelas, soon realized that this was the thief of the Church. The thief was a poor farm worker, alcoholic, aged 19, named Antonio Ferreira, who lived alone in a state of misery. Antonio Ferreira confessed one day after his arrest. From the day of the arrest of Antonio Ferreira until his sentence, much ink flowed in the inquisitorial process, especially when deciding to torture, even after they had already confessed. The inquisitorial sentence was executed on November 23, 1671, consisted in hanging the roober and after burn him.
The TILES In the Standard tell us that sad and sordid story.

Melhor desejos Rudi & Sigrid
