Rome, 1977 May 12 - A Radical parliamentarian shows his card to a policeman
In 1977 a wave of terrorism produced 2,128 attacks on groups such as law enforcements, lawyers, industrialists, political leaders and journalists. Over 30 people were wounded by gunfire, eleven were killed.
The violence that spread throughout the country seemed unstoppable. In Rome, the Radicals organized an illegal demonstration to celebrate the anniversary of the introduction of divorce in this Catholic country. A violent confrontation between police and “Autonomia” activists ensued. At the end of the day a young student girl, Giorgiana Masi, died by a pistol-shot.
Actually we still don't know who shot her.
I saw both policemen and students shooting.
I was only 20 years old when I took these pictures.
Wow, this is a great capture, the policeman's eyes are not even fixed on the person he is confronting, which demonstates to me that he does not want to get into any debate. Well done

Wow, powerful, words to such a powerful image.
Amazing work Sergio. Beautiful tones in these images.
It must have been exciting times for a young photographer & worrying times with such troubles.
Love to see more of these amazing images.
I recognise these photos;-) I also remember this period when my uncle in Napoli was kicked out of univeristy for sympathising with the demonstrators. This is my favourite of the whole series - ie. with the stand-off between the Carabiniere and politician. What card is he carrying, exactly, please?? Bravo, Sergio!

Sergio's pictures are always telling stories...
This one is so sad :((
The expression of the policeman is so hard and straight, well done Sergio!
You are always at the right time!
Without a doubt PRO!
Sergio's work is amazing. I have 2 of his books & The book Quelli Del '77 - Documants all these amazing images & the story stated above. Perfect B&W documentary & journalism photography at it's very best.

I sure wish we had the ability to propose series, especially in cases like this. Thanks for pulling these out of your archive Sergio. Great work for a 20 yr. old. What a rush, no wonder you stayed with documentary photography.
Very good journalistic capture .. the faces around captivate, even down to the almost fully obscured person with just one viewing eye visible and the impassive expression of the uniformed officer, appearing to look straight ahead (but more probably looking at the card), is great ... well captured Sergio.
This vintage photograph confirms that some people just "have it" at an early age; that innate abiility to recognize and capture a perfect moment in time.
This shot should have everyone who has been banging a shutter for ten years or more racing for their archives to dig out the old gems on film that have been forgotten in this digital world. Pro
