A cabin that sets on the grounds of Fort Atkinson State Historical Park. It was the first fort built west of the Missouri River.. It was recommended by Lewis and Clark upon their return that a fort be established to keep peace with the Indians as well as provide protection for new settlers as the that would come later. It was built in 1820, then abandoned in 1829. Rather then migrating along the Missouri River, the pioneers choose to follow the Platte River across Nebraska, so the forts were moved southward.
The grounds are a few miles north of Omaha, NE. in the small town of Fort Calhoun, NE.
outstanding. I have a diary from a woman that lived around them and after the civil war. . Its not a happy diary , lots of family death and placed in the barn until the earth unfroze to berry children. They left to Kansas to try there after starting in Sweden to Oregon, then Nebraska. I did find their relatives from Sweden and gave them a copy of the diary. That was 10 years ago. good work friend.
