Preßnitztalbahn Zugführer

If you follow my work, you are aware of how much I enjoy
shooting European steam locomotives, especially in winter settings. (*)

But sometimes, an image can evoke the huffing, chuffing, and snorting of the “iron horse,”
seemingly impatient to get his train moving…without a locomotive even being present in the photo.

I think this one just might fit that description.

Emerging from the swirl of coal smoke, snow, and winter mists, this Preßnitztalbahn Zugführer (train conductor)
cuts an imposing figure in his traditional uniform, complete with red sash and gold epaulets. He is supervising
a shunting operation on the narrow-gauge Pressnitztalbahn steam railway in the Erzgebirge region of Eastern
Germany. Shortly, his train, pulled by a lovingly maintained steam locomotive, will depart Steinbach for Jöhstadt.

From an Ektachrome original.

This image is available in archival gallery prints and as a custom printed Photo Note Card.

i find the innocence and timelessness* of his face, pose and uniform quite moving! he looks a bit like peter pan rising from the dreamy (steam-engine) ashes of eisenbahn wonderland and inviting us for a ride on polar, er… preßnitzel express ; )). greetings, sabine.

*except for the earring maybe ; )
