In the island of Creta. the capital city Heraklion has accepted influenses of seven civilizations. First, from the Minoan era 2800 BC, Roman era 2nd century BC, than from the Arab(Mauritanian) occupation 8th century AC, Byzantine empire period 6th, 7th,9th-10th century AC, Venetian occupation 13th to 17th century AC, Ottoman occupation 17th to 19th AC, Modern Greek from 1912 onwards....Ancient ruins,fortifications, walls, castles, harbours, churches with precious frescoes and mosaics all of them left behind to remind that, even ferocious conquerors if they are enough civilized to respect human life and art, can leave behind also traces of humanism, morality and culture..
One of the most prominent features of these civilizations is the Venetian fortress that dominates the entrance of the Venetian port of Heraklion seen in the picture.
