The Living Forest (339) : Cross Spider

The Cross Spider (also known as Garden Spider) is very common in forests, heathlands, hedgerows and gardens.
It can easily be identified by a distinctive cross on the upside (not visible on my picture that shows the belly side).

This spider can usually be found sitting at the center of its web, head down, waiting for a prey to get entangled in the web.
The victim is then quickly captured and always wrapped in silk before being eaten.

The female of this species is much larger than a male and thus, the much smaller male must approach a female very cautiously if he wants to mate.
Did you know that if he's not careful, he can end up being eaten by her !
Speaking of girl power…….

Dutch name : Kruisspin
German name : Gartenkreuzspinne
Latin name : Araneus diadematus

In einem feinen Licht hast Du die Kreuzspinne festgehalten, so dass man alle Details gut erkennen kann.

the "being wrapped in silk before being eaten" – nice touch! ; ) i experience it every morning these early autumn days: whenever i cross the front yard, i get entangled in the thread of some very tiny spider – not a cross spider but CROSS with me anyway, i'm sure, as she has to rebuild every morning – big prey like me is a nuisance: destroys the net and always gets away without being digested ; ), and yet… she never tires of trying again! eyes always bigger than the belly, i guess… ; )) greetings, sabine.
