Sprinting across the Susquehanna

The sun has set over the broad Susquehanna River at Havre de Grace, Maryland as Siemens ACS-64 electric locomotive No.622 makes light work of speeding this Amtrak Northeast Regional train on its way to New York.

The "Sprinters" are now the standard power on the high-speed Northeast Corridor, pulling all trains except the premium service Acela Express trips, which are run with European-designed tilt-trainsets powered at both ends. The Sprinters replaced Amtrak's AEM-7 (*) locomotives, which had been the backbone power on the Corridor since the early '80s.

I was in Havre de Grace on this day in June 2016 to capture some of the last trips of the AEM-7s, including the
"Farewell to the AEM-7" fan trip, as well as the then-new ACS-64's on this long and impressive span, built in 1906.

It is interesting how you manage to isolate the train from the rest of the scenery ! Susquehanna is a name I haven't hear in many, many years... it brought back childhood memories from a one year stay not that far away in Pennsylvania. Using google maps and street view, I managed to see the colonial-style house in which we lived 1990/91, back when many trees were clad in "yellow ribbons" and the Cincinnati Reds won the world series. Cheers, Gregory

Thanks, Gregory, for the comment - glad the photo reminded you of the year you were living nearby - and thanks for that reminiscence!
      Cheers,
      Steve

That's really interesting. The Locomotive looks sharp an the car looks like in motion...a nice effect.
