Rush Hour at Myrtle Av-Broadway - No.2

It’s rush-hour on an October afternoon as a Manhattan-bound M train of New Technology R160 railcars is about to enter the Myrtle Avenue/Broadway station in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. It has just crossed the newly rebuilt Myrtle Avenue viaduct and will now run with the BMT J and Z trains on the Jamaica Line, reaching Manhattan via the Williamsburg Bridge, after which it will diverge northward on its way into the Sixth Avenue IND Subway to proceed uptown and then on into Queens.

In the distance, an inbound Z train of older R42 equipment waits at a block signal for the M train to complete its crossover move and the resetting of the slip switches to allow it to proceed into the station.

Interestingly (to this photographer), if the photo had been taken in the 1970’s when the R42 trains were young, instead of the present, the trains would have been as “gaffiti’d” (or worse) as the Bushwick surroundings. What can be counted on now is that, no matter how “decorated” a neighborhood may have become, the trains passing through, whether modern like the R160 M train or older types like the R42, will be bright and shiny (or they won't leave their yards!).
