Praying Mantis (Mantis religiosa) (5)

Coming face to face with a praying mantis is an eerie experience. Keenly interested, they observe us with huge, wrap-around, multi-faceted eyes. Like birds of prey, their vision is binocular, allowing for precise judgements of distance before they strike. If we move, they swivel their heads to follow us visually, as if sizing us up as prey. They will bite, but leave only harmless pinpricks.

The photos of the praying mantises were captured only a few kilometers outside of Basel in the northwestern corner of Switzerland.
