Elevator of Glory, is located in Lisbon, Portugal. It is one of the funicular operated by Carris, and connects the Baixa (Restauradores square) to the Bairro Alto (Garden of San Pedro de Alcantara).
Built by the Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, was inaugurated on October 24, 1885, becoming the second of its kind implemented in the city on the initiative of Mechanical Lifts Company of New Lisbon. The original drive system was rack-and-out by water balance, moving later to be steam. In September 1915 came to be powered by electricity.
Until the late nineteenth century, when traveling at night the lighting inside the cabin was made by candles.
Since February 2002 is classified as a National Monument.
Of the four lifts in operation in the city,it is the busiest , reaching annually transporting over 3 million passengers.
