Sukhothai was the capital of the first Thai Kingdom in northern Thailand when it gained independence from Khmer Kingdom in Angkor in 1238. Sukhothai means the rise of everlasting happiness, but the kingdom only lasted for two centuries. The capital of the Kingdom moved from Sukhothai to Song Khwae in 1347. The kingdom was annexed by Ayutthaya in 1438. The site of the ancient capital is a historical park, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
