Male northern gannets that have occupied a breeding site must court females. Unmated females are usually four to five years old. Before settling in a particular spot in the colony, they fly over the colony several times. When they land, their body posture, which includes a strongly stretched neck, indicates that they are unmated. This body posture is sufficient to trigger courtship in unmated males.

Männliche Basstölpel, die einen Brutplatz besetzt haben, müssen um Weibchen werben. Unverpaarte Weibchen sind meist im Alter von vier bis fünf Jahren. Bevor sie sich an einer Stelle der Kolonie niederlassen, überfliegen sie mehrfach die Kolonie. Landen sie, weist ihre Körperhaltung, zu der unter anderem ein stark gestreckter Hals gehört, sie als unverpaart aus. Diese Körperhaltung reicht bereits aus, um bei unverpaarten Männchen die Werbung auszulösen.
