GCT No. 32 - Nightscape with Viaduct, Vehicles and Vanderbilt

An imperious Cornelius "Commodore" Vanderbilt stands watch before the magnificent Midtown edifice
representing the railroad he created, ensuring that downtown-headed traffic stays on the western leg of
the Park Avenue Viaduct, while uptown vehicles veer rightwards.

Or so it appeared to an admiring wandering photog late of an autumn night.

The scene was captured through a favorite film-era lens, the KMZ TAIR 11A 135mm f/2.8.

This photo hits me right in the feels with its vibe! Technically flawless as always, but that atmosphere is what seals the deal! So, what's the story? In the background, that majestic historic building with the Cornelius "Commodore" Vanderbilt statue, already bridging yesterday and today on its own. Up front, modern cars blurred by headlights, caught mid-motion. To me, this combo feels like a time warp — one second you're in the present, the next you're lost in the past. Kinda like a scene from Kate & Leopold, even if the spot doesn't perfectly match the movie.
Either way, it's a shot that begs you to linger, gaze, savor, and let your imagination run wild. It sparks an idea: Next time you're in New York, go on a motif hunt to recreate that Kate & Leopold magic — Leopold's life across two eras. You'd get some killer photos, maybe even a whole series? Total winner!

      Thank you so much, Susanne!
While I never tire of capturing aspects of this magnificent structure, your insightful and eloquent take on this photo genuinely inspires and energizes me, your cinematic reference all the more so!
Thus, I will have to catch up on "Kate and Leopold" and see about that motif hunt you suggest!
Meantime, thank you for lingering on the photo and letting me know how it affected you - much appreciated!
      LG,
