Die wilden Pferde von Garub

Namibia. 20km westlich von Aus (in Richtung Luderitzbucht) leben circa 250 wilde Pferde. In der Nähe der ehemaligen Bahnstation Garub ist die einzige Wasserstelle zu der die Pferde, wenn die unmittelbare Gegend in der Nähe der Wasserstelle abgeweidet ist, sehr weit laufen muessen. Es gibt mehrere Theorien ob des Ursprungs dieser Pferde, dass sie von den Pferden der Schutztruppler stammen, aus der Zucht des Baron von Wolff (Schloss Duwisib)
oder Rest-bestand der Pferde der Sud-afrikanischen Armee die 1914-1918 gegen deutschen Soldaten bei Aus kaempften. Ihr Bestand variiert, in trocken Jahren schrumpfte die Zahl schon einmal auf 100 Pferde, jetzt hatten wir gute Regenjahre und die Zahl liegt bei 250 und es gibt zahlreiche Fohlen.

The wild horses at Garub have only a single water point which, in years of drought, they have to cover vast distances to reach. Theories as to their descent abound, some say they are the descendants of the German Garrison horses, others that they come from the stud of Baron Wolff at Schloss Duwisib and others that they are the descendants of horses attached to the South African Armed forces that fought German soldiers at Aus in the 1914-1918 war. After a few years of copious rains they are now 250 and there are lots of foals but they have been down to just100 in years of drought.
