Cranberry Fritillary

This colourful butterfly can be found from northern Lapland till Siberia and even Mongolia.
In western Europe, it’s a very rare insect that stands on the Red List of vulnerable and threatened species !

Its favorite habitat are swamps. Such biotopes however are becoming scarcer over here nowadays and so this striking butterfly is acutely endangered by disappearance…….!
I was very happy to see and shoot once a specimen of this species.

Location : Kutenhart (National Park ‘Hohes Venn’, Belgium)

Dutch name : Veenbesparelmoervlinder
German name : Hochmoor-Perlmutterfalter
Latin name : Boloria aquilonaris
