Canal Boat Summer - A Georgetown Impression
Not far from the busy commercial thoroughfares of M Street or Wisconsin Avenue in Washington's
Georgetown lies the calm setting of the historic Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, once a main trade route
between Washington and points west, paralleling the Potomac River.
In addition to walking along the towpath, once trod by mules hauling canal boats, visitors have also
been able to enjoy this stretch of Georgetown aboard a reproduction (*) of the vessels that formerly
plied the waterway, from which this view was captured on a September afternoon in 2022.
The Canal was subsequently closed and drained for extensive restoration of the locks by which water
levels are raised and lowered to make passage up- and downstream possible. So, this photograph is
presented for the first time here, both as an evocation of past experience navigating this historic waterway
and as a wishful preview of the resumption of a most enjoyable "cruise" into Washington history.

What a lovely shot. Until I read your explanation I thought I was looking at one of the English canals.
