Beats flying, doesn't it?

Observation/Lounge car "Hickory Creek" brought up the rear of the legendary "2oth Century Limited,"
the New York Central Railroad's premiere train, operating overnight between New York and Chicago.

It was part of the 1948 re-designed consist of the "Century" and bore the distinctive "lightning stripe" livery in two tones of gray and black with white pinstripes and had distinctive high windows in the observation portion at the rear to allow the best views along the scenic Hudson River Line, which the train followed up to Albany before turning westward.

Until autumn 2024, the restored "Hickory Creek" and a newer tavern lounge car of New York Central lineage were operating at the rear of Amtrak Empire Service trains for special railfan roundtrips to Albany from Penn Station, joining the New York Central Hudson Line, now owned by Metro-North, just north of Spuyten Duyvil.(*)

Those special trips had to be curtailed due to work on Amtrak's East River tunnels, so it was a thrill to at least
be able to catch "Hickory Creek" as it sped through Tarrytown, New York on an October night last year.

This is the photo's first appearance.
