  Thanks. It's one of the most-photographed castles in England.
  Similarly to Edinburgh castle - it is sited on an outcrop of igneous/volcanic rock. The ruling court of the Kings of Northumbria was on this site - in the 7th century - and Celtic Christianity began in England, and spread south from this vicinity.
