Baldan Baraivan monastery
The main building of the monastery was complete destroyed by the communists. More than 3,000 monks had lost their home.
Today, only one lama still lives at the temple. This 90 year old professor of philosophy lives in a newly constructed wooden house at the site of the old monastery.
The dismantling of the former Soviet Union and a new constitution in 1992 have allowed the revival of a more open interest in Buddhist lamaism in Mongolia. For many Mongolians, this heralds the chance to develop a stronger identity with their past culture.
