AstoriaScape No.13 - Departing Ditmars
In the bright mid-morning sunshine of an early September day, a Manhattan-bound
Astoria Line N Train of ten R160 railcars sets out from its terminus station, Ditmars Boulevard.
This part of the long station platform passes directly under the viaduct that carries Amtrak's Northeast Corridor trains toward the main span of the Hell Gate Bridge (*) on their way from New York City to points in New England
After making a straight shot down 31st Street on elevated structures, serving several stations in Astoria, then snaking its way through some photography-appealing S-curves (**) high above the Long Island City street grid amidst a towering cityscape, and making its final stop in Queens at Queensboro Plaza, a two-level station shared with the {IRT] 7 Train, it will descend alongside the Queensboro Bridge and tunnel under the East River to Midtown Manhattan.
The train's final destination, Coney Island in Brooklyn, will involve another transiting of the East River, this time high above on the Manhattan Bridge, after first taking a diagonal journey through Manhattan on the [BMT] Broadway Line.
