Astipalea

Greece
South Aegean Sea
island of Astipalea
(The Astipalean series are dedicated to Christine L.)

Astipalea is a tiny island in south Aegean Sea belonging in the Dodecanesian complex. It was inhabited since 2500 BC.During the Roman occupation it was a place for exile but Pliny the Elder reports that Rome accorded Astipalea the status of a free state.During the years the island was seized by numerous conquerors. Romans, Byzantines,Venetians, Ottomans, Italians all left their traces of civilization till, eventually, in 1948 it became part of the Greek state.
It is mostly rocky and bare with less than 1000 inhabitants who struggle to survive during the hard winter months with a boat reaching the island only once a week and if weather conditions permit it.They are patiently waiting for the summer months to come and get a push from the tourists. Yet, the island has beautiful shores and a capital Chora among the prittiest in Aegean as it crawls uphill to the imposing Venetian castle on top.

Even in b&w I can "see" the deep blue sky, the white clouds and houses, the green .... gorgeous view if this town. Beautiful, strong and harmonic. Compliments.

"crawl up" it does! in a very dynamic, impressive and breathtakingly beautiful way! the houses look very much alive, as though they were really moving up the hill, where the scenic venetian castle is perched under the lid-like horizontal cloud – wow! just amazing!! a much sought after holy grail for adventurers – climbers! ; ) – to strive for! the authoritarian cloud, however, is my favorite detail! it's as though it's trying to limit human ambition by putting an end to their vertical advance/ascent, by putting the climbers in their place: "this far but no further! enough is enough! the sky's the limit! you people are earthbound after all!" ; ) greetings, sabine. p.s.: if i were one of the climbers, i'd make sure to visit those three little towers on my way up!

It gives a bit of the impression of a smoking vulcano.
And a "photo vulcano" it certainly is. Great shot.
