In the case you’re wanting to be in SAN FRANCISCO during the two America’s Cup-series races this year and the grand finale next September 2013, here’s some information so you can plan to see the races in SF Bay. The races each day of the AC-events will be VERY easily seen from ANY beach area in the northern areas of the San Francisco, and any opened pier(s) – many SF piers are CLOSED during big events such as this due to safety reasons. If you drive into SF hoping to see the race, better to ride BART or bus into the area you want to see. Expect massive traffic jams anywhere close to the north side of the City, and other areas such as Sausalito. Foot- and automobile traffic will be VERY high. Also be wary of the weather and dress in layers. Typically the fog is more apparent during the summer, so bring a jacket just in case that fog does roll in!!
a warning now: hotel prices are normally high at ANY time of the year BUT for the AC-events they will be even higher. if you see ANYTHING of a room for under $150, look at its location, and yelp that hotel. Be wary of anything that seems too low and good to be true because it probably is!
Dates of the race series:
August 21-26, 2012
October 2-7, 2012, during Fleet Week
This period will be especially busy with traffic and people as Fleet Week brings to the City and the Bay Area more than a million visitors each year in hopes of seeing the Blue Angels perform. They practice on Thursday, official practices on Friday also, and the shows on Saturday and Sunday. If fog presents a safety problem, the show can, and will be canceled as it has happened in previous years. They will NOT know if the show will be canceled due to safety concerns till they fly to check their visibility.
