Abandoned - A Canton Memory
The Northern Central Grain Elevator was an imposing - if somewhat intimidating in its blackened abandoned state - structure in Baltimore's Canton section. It was completed in 1922, built almost entirely of concrete, so as to minimize areas in which grain dust could collect and cause explosions, due to its high inflammability. It was the largest grain elevator on the East Coast, and boasted a number of extraordinary features including massive freight unloaders that could pick up railcars full of grains and tilt them so as to empty out their cargo.
It fell into disuse as a result of the Soviet Grain Embargo in 1980, as well as a shift in grain shipping to
Gulf Coast ports ... remaining a hulking and forbidding presence along the docks until its recent demolition.

great perspective and cut and well shown inblack and white ... a sad story of loss of more
than just the grain elevator facilities with many
jobs lost as well !!
