A VOLCANIC PAST
LANYU (Orchid Island), is one of Taiwan's most fascinating places. It is a wild and beautiful volcanic island. The humid, rainy climate has cloaked the mountainous interior of the island with a thick rain-forest cover, and has provided it with a great variety of plant and animal life.
Lanyu is the only area of Taiwan's purest aboriginal tribe: the seafaring Yamis or "Dawu". Thanks to their isolation they have managed to preserve much of their traditional heritage.
The coastline is most amazing with the shapes created by volcanic activities on the ocean floor.
