A Mother and her Slugs + Tons of Export Coal - A Curtis Bay CSX Moment
At the CSX Curtis Bay Coal Terminal Piers in Baltimore, a modified EMD GP-39 diesel-electric locomotive with two "slugs" is shunting hopper cars, full of coal from mines to the west. The slugs are "almost-locomotives" equipped with traction motors only (no prime movers or generators); they use excess current from the locomotive to boost overall traction to handle heavy loads at low speeds. The leader ("mother") is also different in that it was modified for operation from outside the traditional cab. The "mother-and-her-slugs" are used to shunt heavy cuts of coal hopper cars into the dumper, one of the last steps between the mines and ocean going coal vessels.
