50d novice
Hello. Ive just acquired a used Canon 50d body with about a 40,500 shot history. Going from a 400D to a 50D is quite the leap in technology. I would recommend readying Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. It will teach you everything you need to know to understand the modes and the principles of photography that will make your 50D experience much better. You might also benefit from meeting up with someone who is familiar with the XXD series of camera. Often times they can answer a lot of your questions.
You're not doing anything wrong—those red focus points you see during playback are normal. The Canon 50D shows them to indicate which autofocus point was used when the photo was taken. This is just an overlay and doesn’t appear in the actual image. If you’d like to turn it off, go to the Menu, find “AF point display” under the Playback settings, and set it to “Off.” It’s a handy feature for some, but optional if you find it distracting.
