What lens for Macro with Bokeh?
Hi guys, i want to make macro photo's of flowers and products, but dont know what lens to use. I also like bokeh a lot. I got Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 and Canon 85mm 1.8 So which lens is better and what are exactly the differences if you using them for macro?
I also have Canon 24-105mm f4 (but as i understand and experience that u get a better bokeh with f1.8 and f2.8 right?)

This site may help. On the left side you will see links for lenses like, 50mm, 85mm etc, click the link and you can see the results.

I would try all, to see witch one performes best to your liking...

With greater apertures and longer lenses you get more blur in the out of focus areas.
Also more distance to the background helps blurring it.
Bokeh is the "quality" of that blur.
Like how smooth the background (or the foreground) in the picture is rendered by the lens.
It's depending on the lens, aperture form (better be round) and some other technical stuff (how a lens is optically corrected, ect).

HI thanks for the link Ken, it helped a lot!
Marc thanks for reply, im looking forward to your conclusion after you test them. And im thinking on buying a 100-400mm in the far away future, would it work more for my purposes?
cheers

Ah, sorry!
I meant, you should try out all your lenses! ;)

I love the Canon 100mm 2.8 L IS macro lense for this reason.
Its bokeh is like butter cream :-)

But the Sigma 150mm 2.8 could be also an option. Don't know yet about the new one with stabilizer (OS) which is due to be released soon.
I had that previously and sold it just because I needed a shorter lens in my studio.

For true macro photography, especially for flowers and products, a dedicated macro lens like the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro is your best option. It allows 1:1 magnification and still gives you nice bokeh. Your Canon 85mm f/1.8 offers great background blur but can’t focus close enough for real macro shots. If bokeh is a priority and you're not doing extreme close-ups, the 85mm will do fine, but for actual macro detail, a true macro lens is the way to go.

cordialement

Hey! It's great you're diving into macro photography. While your 85mm f/1.8 will give you beautiful bokeh due to the wider aperture, neither of those lenses are true macro lenses designed for 1:1 magnification. For real macro work, you might consider a dedicated macro lens. I've heard good things about the Canon 100mm macro, though I know some people who actually stack extension tubes onto their existing lenses. It gets them really close, almost like looking through a little Sprunki tunnel at the tiny details! And yes, you're right, f/1.8 and f/2.8 will generally give you a shallower depth of field and therefore more bokeh than f/4.
