fuji finepix f40fd vs. Nikon coolpix P5000

I just got a coolpix P5100 and love having it around to carry at times when the DSLR is just too bulky.
I picked this camera just because of how many manual options were available along with a hot shoe for a flash if needed. You can also add on lens adapters for wide angle if wanted.
Its great quality, 12mp, clean high iso and a good price.
But I have to say if you still find yourself stuck in between your two choices something like a Canon Powershot G9 is a step above the P5100, pricier but not quite a DSLR's price.
It is similar to the P5100 in many ways but also gives you the option to shoot RAW which is priceless in some situations, and also has a wider lens.
Just my input, hope it helps.

help! i need advise on lenses for the olympus E500

While I can not advise on any specific lenses for the Olympus E500 - I can comment on your last question relative to the Canon 5D.

I moved to the 5D from the Pentax *istDS. The 5D is an excellent camera, love the full frame sensor, quite like Canon (took me about 1,000 shots - one month - to begin to get used to it, first Canon I have ever owned), not cheap (and neither are the high quality lenses - read L series - you will want to match it to). If you have the financial resources to make the jump relative to both body and lenses, the 5D is a top camera.

But you will probably get more satisfaction earlier for a lot less money if you get that next Olympus lens you obviously want. The E500 is also a great camera plus the Olympus optics are usually excellent!

Once you decide to do a switch from one platform to another you are facing a pretty steep initial and ongoing capital investment. Only you can decide if it's worth it to you.

And now that Nikon has finally entered the full sized sensor arena your choices have just gotten greater (but not cheaper).
