Valor No.1

On this sunny afternoon in September 2001, I had gone to the Iwo Jima Memorial, overlooking Washington, DC from Arlington, Virginia,
to view the fly-by of an Air Force B-52, part of a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery for victims of the 9/11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon.

The aircraft in the photograph is obviously not a B-52, but the moment was meaningful, representing the return of civilian air transport
into Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, which had been shut down in the aftermath of the horrific events of 9/11.

Indeed, the return of airliners to the skies over the Potomac was symbolic of the hesitant return to normalcy after 9/11.

Felix de Weldon's sculpture, while depicting an event in World War Two, was, to this photographer,
symbolic of the valor shown by so many on 9/11 and in the times that would follow.
