With its heavy muscling, the Belgian is one of the strongest draft horse breeds in the world and weights more than 1 ton !

At the end of the 19th century, the Belgian became very highly sought and many of them were exported for use all over Europe, Russia and America.

Recently there has been a boom of interest in the USA for this heavy draft breed.

Dutch name : Belgisch Trekpaard
German name : Belgisches Kaltblut
Latin name : Equus caballus

Der Belgier ist wirklich eine sehr imposante Pferderasse. Das Erstaulichste dabei ist, dass viele kaltblutpferderassen, die heutzutage fast nicht mehr als Arbeitspferde gebracht werden, zum Teil deshalb überlebt haben, weil sie in den Nationen, in denen viel Pferdefleisch gegessen wird, noch als schlachtpferde gezüchtet wurden/werden. Es trat in den letzten jahren eine Kehrtwende ein, und diese Pferde werden von Liebhabern wieder gezüchtet, weil sie im Freizeitbereich wieder für ihren Ursprungszweck gehalten werden.

A most impressive strong horse - an excellent portrait with the light showing off his shiny and beautifully coloured hide. Love to see them being driven in a team of 6 or 8 - what a show!!!
