To further shape the ram's horn and to round the horn's neck into a round shape, it is heated with a heat gun and the press is also preheated. Making a first class shepherd or walking stick is a tedious process. It was a special experience to see John doing his craft.

Um das Widderhorn weiter zu formen und den Hals des Horns in eine runde Form zu bringen, wird es mit einer Heißluftpistole erhitzt und auch die Presse wird vorgewärmt. Die Herstellung eines erstklassigen Hirten- oder Wanderstabs ist ein langwieriger Vorgang. Es war ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis, John dabei beobachten zu dürfen.

How to Make a Ram’s Horn Shepherd’s Crook Handle for a Walking Stick

"The method of transforming a Ram’s horn into a beautiful handle on a walking stick has changed considerably over time. The main difference is the horn itself. Back in the days of common land and shepherds, rams were allowed to live much longer and therefore produced much larger horns. Then, only the solid tips of the horns were bent and made into the handle of choice (usually a shepherd’s crook or market stick). Nowadays, as only predominantly smaller horns are available, the solid tip of the horn is not enough to make a handle so the horn needs to be compressed and bent repeatedly until the right shape and a solid handle is achieved. This is a very long and slow process and that is why you won’t find any cheap walking sticks with curly ram’s horn handles!

So now you have the basic shape of the crook, the next step is to apply more heat and pressure to squeeze the crook into the best shape and finish possible. Starting at the neck of the handle heat and pressure is applied working right the way to the nose. This stage can be done in one go and the result should be a nice looking crook handle with rounded edges."

Wie man aus einem Widder Horn den Griff für einen Hirten- oder Wanderstab macht

"Die Methode, ein Widderhorn in einen schönen Griff am Gehstock zu verwandeln, hat sich im Laufe der Zeit erheblich verändert. Der Hauptunterschied ist das Horn selbst. Schon zu Zeiten des gemeinschaftlichen Landbesitzes und der Hirten durften Widder viel länger leben und produzierten viel größere Hörner, dann wurden nur die festen Spitzen der Hörner gebogen und zum Griff der Wahl gemacht. Heute, da überwiegend nur kleinere Hörner verfügbar sind, reicht die feste Spitze des Horns nicht aus, um einen Griff zu fertigen, so dass das Horn mehrfach Hitze und Druck benötigt bis es die rihtige Form erhält und zu einem soliden Griff wird.Dies ist ein sehr langer und langsamer Prozess und deshalb werden Sie keine billigen Gehstöcke mit geschweiften Widderhorngriffen finden!

So, jetzt haben Sie die Grundform des Griffes und der nächste Schritt besteht darin, mehr Hitze und Druck anzuwenden, um den Griff in die beste Form für die Endbearbeitung zu pressen. Beginnend am Hals des Griffs wird Wärme und Druck bis zur Nase erzeugt. Diese Phase kann in einem Schritt durchgeführt werden und das Ergebnis sollte ein gut aussehender Gaunergriff mit abgerundeten Kanten sein."
