Great Hall at Ellis Island
Between 1892-1924, immigrants fled their home countries in hopes of entering the New World, USA. Around 12 million people passed through Ellis Island. They congregated in this Great Hall for up to 5 hours before they were called before legal authorities and led through mental and physical testing to gain entry to the United States. Although my visit was very short (as I had a plane to catch home that afternoon) I was very moved by the stories and exhibits in this museum, imagining what my ancestors went through so many years ago.

A part of my sicilian family emigrated in 1894 and an other part in 1898 and sure were 5 hours in this immense Hall at Ellis Island. I'm moved by this picture which is for me a strong document. Thank youKim.

Kim- thank you so much for your photoessay of Ellis Island. My forebears came through there, but I never had to opportunity to see it.Now I have an idea of what they went through.
