Yes, that annoyed me as well. I played with it in Photoshop a bit, and it helped a little. I wish I would have just focused manually though, it really isn't that big of a surprise that AF didn't really do what I wanted here.

Oh, and yes I do spend a decent amount of time in the kitchen... :)

Hmm, your kitchen seems to be a very creative place for you...
In this picture there are fine colors and a really good light, it works very fine with those reflections on the glass. I'm a little bit in doubt about the two points of focus: there's sharpness on the towel and on another level on the glass. Maybe it would be better to blur the sharpness in the lower left corner a little bit. But as I said, I'm not quite sure about.
