once upon a time – 1888, that is – the people of portland built their first railroad bridge across the willamette river and called it their "steel bridge" because it was made of steel rather than wrought iron – a trailblazing innovation at the time! it lasted for a mere quarter of a century: then, four score and fourteen years ago – 1912, that is – ; )) our forefathers brought forth upon this town a new bridge and… gave it its predecessor's name! it's as simple and prosaic as that – history can't be dramatic at all times ; ))) the drama, and patriotism is in the picture, though – and for some reason it made me look up the great gettysburg address once again. greetings, sabine. p.s.: thank you wikipedia for the "steel bridge" facts! ; )) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel_Bridge
