My first Road Trip, with many Pictures

From coal mines to the Coal Miner's Daughter, from folk art to folk music, from working farms to formal gardens, a "Real South Road Trip" will take you on a road trip USA adventure you will never forget. If you love music, you'll touch the lives of great southern musicians such Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, BB King, Dolly Parton and Otis Redding.

Literary road trips include fine arts tours, famous movie sets and southern writers tours. Visit the home of William Faulkner or the hometowns of John Grisham and Eudora Welty. Explore the living history of the south as you walk in the footsteps of US Civil Rights leaders Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks and gain insight into the legacies of US Presidents, William J. Clinton, James Earl Carter, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Most southern states have excellent vineyards producing superior wines, and a southern wine tasting tour offers the perfect opportunity to sample the true flavors of the South. Scenic highways and byways lead to exciting discoveries, unique destinations, natural wonders and historic landmarks. No matter what your interest, there's a Real South Road Trip designed just for you.

My own Trip:

Day 1: Atlanta Start your holiday in this dynamic Olympic City. See the house where Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone with the Wind, visit the World of Coca-Cola and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Historic Site or visit the CNN studios. You could also spend the day shopping in one of many Atlanta malls including Lenox Square/Phipps Plaza, the Mall of Georgia, Discover Mills or Southlake Mall. Other options include the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, Zoo Atlanta, the Cyclorama Civil War display and the High Museum of Art. If time permits, head 18 miles east and spend some time visiting Stone Mountain with its park, cable car and huge hillside carving of Confederate heroes. Then for evening entertainment, check out the many options at Atlanta Underground. Hotel: Fairfield Inn by Marriott Downtown
Day 2: Atlanta - Savannah Travel south on Interstate 75, then east on Interstate 16 until you arrive at the charming port city of Savannah which is your next stop. Take a carriage tour down cobblestone streets and through the gracious brick squares of one of the South’s most beautifully preserved 18th century cities, celebrated in the book and film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Browse through the shops and dine in the restored cotton warehouses along the waterfront. Accommodation during your stay in Savannah will be at the Best Western Gateway, located 10 miles from the Historic district, but conveniently located close to the Outlet Shopping Mall. Hotel: Best Western Savannah Gateway Total Mileage: 220 miles
Day 3: Savannah - Charleston Today we move north to the historic port city of Charleston, which is steeped in history. Take the more scenic route 17-north stopping in Hilton Head on the way, or travel a bit faster on Interstate 95 north. During your stay take a boat tour to Fort Sumter, the site where the first shot of the Civil War was fired on 12 April 1861, or visit Middleton Place, a carefully preserved 18th century plantation. Enjoy the many museums and historical buildings as you take a leisurely carriage tour around the old City (admission prices not included in tour price). Hotel: Holiday Inn Riverview
Day 4: Savannah Take a carriage tour down cobblestone streets and through the gracious brick squares of one of the South’s most beautifully preserved 18th century cities, celebrated in the book and film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Browse through the shops and dine in the restored cotton warehouses along the waterfront Hotel: Best Western Savannah Gateway
Day 5: Savannah - Charleston Today we move north to the historic port city of Charleston, which is steeped in history.
