Common Lilac is a popular ornamental plant in gardens, because of the attractive, sweet smell of its flowers.
The plant is native to the Balkan Peninsula in south-eastern Europe, where it grows on rocky hills and was introduced into European gardens at the end of the 16th century.
Dutch name : Sering
German name : Gemeiner Flieder

as a child i used to chuckle whenever i heard the term "gemein" referring to animals and plants, for "gemein" also means "vicious and mean" in german! so i always pictured the "gemeine heckenrose" as a rose with nasty thorns, meaner and more wicked than any other rose in the world ; ))! and it holds true for this beautiful lilac shrub, too: it's "gemein" indeed, for it makes me want to stick my nose in its many tiny blossoms and inhale their wonderful scent ; )) – but (virtually ; ))!) i can't… greetings, sabine. p.s. they look lovely against the dark background!

.... and a very uncommon image. Just gorgeous, Mark ... the light is brilliant, and the tiny blossoms are exquisite against the dark background.
Yes, we have had lilac in bloom since April ... so great to see everything wake up.
cheers, Adele
